Vincent's 15 Month Update

Height/Weight: At his last appointment at 15 months, he was 22lbs 13oz (26%), 32 inches long (77%) and had a head circumference of 49.5cm (97%)

Daily: The daily routines have changed quite a bit! Since Mike started his new job, he is only home from 8-9 PM to 4:30 AM, so we don't see him a lot. For this reason, I alternated Vincent's nap and bedtime schedule, to where he could spend a little bit of time with his daddy every night before bed.
Vincent is pretty much down to one nap now. Every time I've tried to put him down for a second nap in the past week to two weeks, I don't think he has gone to sleep at all. He just talks to his lovies and keeps turning his sounds back on. During the day, Vincent spends quite a bit of time playing with his toys in the living room. Since he stopped crawling and only walks to get from A to B, I put away the foam mat, because he kept pulling pieces out and tripping in the holes. I also moved the baby gate in such a way, that he has full access the living room now - the gate runs from behind the couch to the end of the entertainment center. He is a lot happier with more room to play! I'm just not completely ready to give him access to the whole house yet - particularly because of the cat litter! Yucky. While he plays, I often play Sesame Street classics or Fraggle Rock in the background, but he still only really pays attention when music comes on, dances and returns to playing. But before he turns 18 months old, I'd like to have him pretty much completely weaned off the TV. I'd prefer him to listen to music or kids audio books instead, so he won't become so dependent on visual stimulation from a screen.

He LOVES playing outside! We don't go out a whole lot, because frankly, it's just too hot. But he will pick up a rock in each hand and go exploring around the block with me! He loves picking up little pieces of grass, pebbles and other randomness to hand to me.

Sleep: Vincent is now waking up between 8:30 and 9 AM. His nap usually ranges from noon until 2 or 3 PM. As I mentioned above, he is not really taking a second nap anymore, so I haven't put him down for one in a couple of days and so far, he has done pretty well without it! His bedtime is 9 PM now, sometimes a little earlier, depending on what time Mike gets home. He has done pretty well transitioning into this new schedule and I am so glad! Mike hadn't seen Vince in over a week when we finally decided to change his schedule - it was really affecting them both to not be able to see each other. He sleeps through the night just about every night which makes momma super happy! :D As speaking of, he has been back in his own room since the end of May. Our bedtime routine is a little different now, since he is no longer drinking formula. I change his diaper and put him in his jammies, then read to him, letting him take some swigs of soy milk through a straw when he reaches for it. After the book, I rock him and sing him a song or two, before putting him down. Last night, I put him to bed with no Zippy for the first time and he did SO well! He has been squeezing one, if not BOTH of his arms out of his Zippy for quite some time, and recently started taking the entire thing off all together! So I figured it was time. Now I just put a blanket over him and tuck him in, give him his lovies, turn on his music and that's it! I tell him goodnight and he goes to sleep on his own.

Eating: At about 13 months, we finished the last container of formula. It took a little longer to wean him, because he got really sick with a tummy bug right after his first birthday. It took him a while to get over it and eat properly again. Trying to get him to drink whole milk never worked! He does not like it at all. But he loves soy, almond and coconut milk! So I've been giving him that and sippy cups with 1/4 juice (usually apple or orange) 3/4 water or just water throughout the day. He is just like is momma - he goes to town on a bottle of water! I'm glad he keeps so hydrated. He has become quite a bottomless pit, too! The only "baby food" he still eats are those Gerber Graduate meals, which make it easy on me to give him dinner. Since Mike gets home so late and I don't make dinner until then, I always give Vincent something different at around 7 PM. I feed him breakfast right after he gets up, around 9. He has a banana and a packet of instant oatmeal almost every morning. For lunch, I give him a ham and cheese sandwich and some fruit - usually grapes. I've been feeding him a late lunch after his second nap and it seems to work well! He gets snacks throughout the day: usually plain goldfish crackers or plain cheerios. We've done away with yogurt melts and puffs completely, since he has been fine eating non-baby food snacks. He still loves his fruits and veggies! I can't eat a banana around him without him screaming "NANA!" at me! Haha!

First time at Wendy's!

Sizes: Vincent is in 18 and 24 month tops and 12 and 18 month bottoms for the most part. A lot of 12 month onesies and shirts still fit him, but it really depends on the brand! I recently sorted through all of his clothes and put away everything that doesn't fit anymore. As far as shoes, size 4 is still a little big on him, but they fit okay with socks, especially if the shoes lace up.

Milestones and Changes:
  • Vincent had an AWESOME 1st birthday party!

  • Poor dude had his first tummy bug the week after his birthday. The whole house caught it and though it only lasted a couple of days for us, it lasted a whole week for him!

  • As speaking of sickness, he also had his first eye AND ear infection at the same time, in both eyes and ears! Poor little man was so miserable. Luckily through the process, we found a new awesome pediatrician and he started feeling better within a day of starting medication!

  • He has picked up some new skills, such as waving bye-bye, stacking the rings on his ring stacker correctly, stacking wooden blocks on top of one another and putting shapes into his shape sorting box by himself. When he has done something successfully, he will look at me, smile and clap! It's adorable how proud he gets!

  • He is understanding a whole lot now. He knows the meaning of yes and no and the names of several objects and people. For instance, I ask him "Vincent, where is Snoopy?" and he will bring Snoopy to me! He also gives stuffed animals snuggles when I say "Give him/her snuggles!".

  • He has become very good at expressing joy and displeasure in things. For instance, when he is mad, tired, teething or wants attention, he very loudly yells "Nein!!" "NeinneinneinNEIN!". Of course his first German word would be "No." xD When he is happy or likes something, he dances, giggles and plays peek-a-boo!
"Nein!"

Playing Peek-A-Boo
  • Vincent got to meet some horses for the first time! As with just about every animal, he giggled and giggled at them!

  • Vincent finally met his Granddad and Granny for the first time!!

  • He also met his great, great grandfather for the first time! Getting to have all 5 generations together was a real treat!

  • He was also the ring bearer in our wedding! These past couple of months have been packed full of new milestones and experiences.

  • Tantrums. OH THE TANTRUMS. If he knows he is in trouble and I say "Vincent Paul, no sir!!" or don't give him something he wants, he really loses it. Stage 1: he makes what I like to call his "butthurt face". Stage 2: starts grunting loudly and swatting at whatever is in front of him. Stage 3: starts making hulk fists and screaming in little bursts. Stage 4: begins to cry and headbutt everything, including the floor. Yeah. Not fun. I try to remain calm, gentle and consistent, yet firm, so that he really understands I mean business.
The famous "butthurt" face...
  • Vincent got his first full haircut on June 21st! I loved his curly little baby locks, but it was getting in his face and it was time for a summer cut.

Vincent's 1 Year Update!

Man - I am posting this SO late!! From Vincent's birthday on has been complete and utter chaos between his birthday, the wedding and several other changes. I didn't want to post this until I got the final photo of me holding Vince with the striped shirt to complete the series....but we never took it! *sob* So much for promising myself to follow through with these things! Hehe! Anyway, better late than never, here is Vincent's 1 year update!

Height/Weight: According to our home scale and measuring tape, Vincent weighs 21 lbs (34%), is 30 inches long (74%) and has a head circumference of 50cm (98%). At his one year check up, he weighed 22 lbs, but was 28.5 in long, so we were a little off on our own measurements!

Daily: Our daily routine is the same as last month, aside from occasionally switching from 2 to 1 naps per day, depending on our activities. He has two to three solid meals with small snacks in between and three to four bottles per day. Vincent seems to enjoy running errands, although we don't do it every day! I've noticed that he is particularly fond of Hancock Fabrics, because he likes the way the fabric tickles his hands when we roll by! It's also a great way for him to feel and experience different textures. Apparently he likes blue, because that's the color he always seems to grab.
At home, I've been a bit less worried about letting him walk around (with a little help) on the tile floor, so that he can explore the house! But he does still spend most of his wake time at home on his play mat. We sit together and practice our animal sounds, our letters and numbers, and problem solving with his ring stacker and shape sorter. One thing I do let him do, which I promised I wouldn't until he is at least two, is let him watch a little bit of TV in the morning and in the evening. Either an episode of Sesame Street or two episodes of Fraggle Rock. He doesn't seem interested at all until the music comes on, then he starts dancing! :D
His bedtime routine is still the same.

Sleep: Vincent has slept through the night just about every night for the past month. If he does wake up, he finds his binky and goes back to sleep pretty quickly and only occasionally needs a bottle in the middle of the night. The first two nights back in our bedroom were a little rough, but he got used to the old environment pretty quickly. I was so afraid that being back in our bedroom would affect his sleeping, but it really hasn't! And I've noticed that he doesn't wake up to every tiny sound like he used to, which makes it easier to go into the room to go to bed without disturbing him.
We still have the same bedtime and sleeping routine, giving him a bath every other night before bed. He does a little bit better with baths now - I've found that the trick is to give him a bath toy to take with him out of the tub to keep him busy while I dry him off, put on a new diaper and lotion! His bedtime routine has become second nature. He knows exactly what happens, because I haven't changed anything. I sing to him while he drinks his bottle, then we read a couple of stories, always ending in "The Going to Bed Book", which I've read to him nearly every single night since we moved to Midland. He has begun to interact with the book, laughing at certain things, and helping me turn pages. I love how much he loves being read to! And he still sleeps in zippies, four of which Grandma made for him! He sleeps terribly without it or his two crocheted lovies from Granny.
As far as naps go, he is right on the edge of switching to one nap per day, so there have been times he will just take one long 2.5 to 3 hour nap mid-day. (Usually when we're out and about) We will continue to experiment with it until he can get into a good routine appropriate for him and his age.

Eating: For the most part, we've cut down to three 8oz bottles a day. I feed him one in the morning, one after his first nap, then the last before bed. He gets three solid meals with snacks in between. Lately it's been a banana and plain cheerios for breakfast, a sandwich or some pasta and a Gerber Graduates meal for dinner and food of our plates here and there. He loves chicken, beef, pasta with different sauces, mixed vegetables (green beans in particular), chopped up bananas and apples with or without cinnamon and yogurt. He likes to snack on cheerios, yogurt melts and veggie puffs (particularly the ranch, veggie ones) in between meals. When he is hungry, he yells "Nananana!" (Banana haha). I've also begun to give him water and juice in a sippy cup throughout the day. Unfortunately, milk is still a no-go, so we are going to have to explore different options once he is completely weaned off of formula.
Oh! And he really likes feeding other people. Particularly the dogs. He even tries to feed his stuffed friends sometimes!

Sharing yogies with "DeeDee" the Ewok!

Sizes: Vincent is in 12 month and 18 month clothing. He will be in size 4 diapers for quite a while still. We finally got him some bigger socks, because the ones he had, he has completely outgrown. He is in a size 3 shoe now, but still fits in his 9-12 month crib shoes. We will likely retire them now though, since he has begun walking!

1 Year Milestones and Changes:
  • We took our first trip to the playground on February 10th and Vincent had fun in the baby swing for the first time! He also managed to walk around the park while holding my hands.

  • Vincent FINALLY got not only his first tooth this past month, but his first THREE! All within a little over a week of one another. His first was his left lateral incisor on the top on the 10th of February, followed by his bottom central incisors on the 18th and 19th. It looks like the next one to come through will be his right lateral incisor on the top, so we will have a little vampire baby! Hehe :D (His left lateral incisor and left front tooth came in on the 21st of March and his right front tooth came in on the 9th of April, leaving us with 6 teeth now!)

  • New teeth means brushing them too! I got Vincent his first little toothbrush and some baby toothpaste that is safe to swallow. Funny how he hates me feeling his gums, but doesn't mind me brushing his teeth!
  • Vincent celebrated his 1st Valentine's Day!

  • Vincent has become very used to using a sippy cup. Throughout the day, I've been offering him water, apple and orange juice and milk, but as I mentioned above, he is not a fan at all!

  • He took his first steps to me on the 11th of February! He had taken one or two single steps at a time before, but this time he walked all the way across his mat. He lifts up his arms in the air like a little ape. It is so funny! And sometimes he will giggle so hard, that he gets weak in the knees and just collapses into my arms. He has gotten pretty confident with it the past few weeks and has gotten better about sitting down when he is getting unstable instead of falling over. He has also started to walk in between his toys instead of dropping down into a crawl, since he has found he can get from A to B faster if he walks. I am hoping by our wedding next month, he will be able to walk down the aisle with a little help to be our ring bearer! :)

Vincent's 11 Month Update!

Height/Weight: According to our home scale and measuring tape, Vincent now weighs 21 lbs (34%), is 29 inches long (42%). Once he goes in for his 1 year check up (one year?! *soooob*), we will get some more accurate measurements! :)

Daily: Vincent's schedule has been altered a little bit, but is along the same lines. We wake up at 8 AM every morning and he still goes down for the night between 7 and 8. We usually shoot for about 7:30. He takes two naps, but they are shorter now. My goal is to have him up for three hours straight in between naps and that's usually when he starts showing signs of getting tired anyway.
During the day, Vincent loves playing with his toys in his play pen! His absolute favorite toy is his Playskool Rocktivity table. He knows exactly how many times to hit the drum to turn the song on and when he does, he dances! That toy has been a hit since day one and I'm glad we got it for him! He also still enjoys both of his walkers and is able to walk and push them across his play mat. His favorite thing is tipping them over though! He really likes to sit with me and play with his shape sorting box. I dump them all out onto the floor and he has learned to put them all back inside and close the lid! When he wants me to open it (it's not easy to open), he will start shouting and smacking the lid. He can also take shapes back out! He has recently discovered the result of dropping things, so he turns throwing his toys outside of his play pen area a game. He likes the sound of objects crashing onto the floor!
We play patty cake together, roll a ball or his little Tonka truck back and forth to one another and we practice walking. He also likes to put toys in my lap and climb on me. :)
Usually in the mornings before his first nap, I let Vincent crawl around and play in his room, because it's the only other place besides his play mat where he can crawl around freely without being disturbed by pets or getting into things (some things you just can't baby proof!). This will have to end soon though, since my brother is having to move back in with us! So Vincent will be back in our bedroom again.
We still have the same bedtime routine as we have for most of his life! :)

Sleep: Sleep has been SO great this past month! I really have no complaints. He will only wake one time, between 4 and 6 for a bottle, if he does at all. I am a little bummed to announce that we are going to have to put Vincent back in our room though, because my brother will be moving back in with us. I LOVE my brother and I love having him close, do not get me wrong, but I am just hoping that Vince will continue to sleep okay. Mike and I are going to do everything in our power to avoid waking him up now that we will be sharing a room again. We have all become completely different people since we've been getting better sleep! Haha!
As I mentioned above, we still wake at 8 AM, Vince goes to bed for the night between 7 and 8 PM and he has two naps in between, with (generally) 3 hours of awake time in between sleeping. I haven't had to set alarms anymore to keep us in the routine, because we've gotten so used to it that it isn't necessary. However I always wake him up from his last nap before 5 if he hasn't woken already, so it doesn't mess with his bedtime.
He has gotten very good at self-soothing and going to sleep without much help. I sing to him while he gets his bottle before bedtime and we always read stories afterward. I put him down in his crib and give him a kiss, then give him two little lovies that my Stepmom knitted for him, turn on his mobile music and leave the room. Rarely do I hear a peep after I leave! *knocks on wood*! And as speaking of the lovies, I am convinced that they've been helping him sleep better. I often find him with one or both of them tucked under his arms when he is asleep. <3

Eating: Vincent has been drinking between 24 and 32 oz of formula per day, so between 3 and 4 8oz bottles. Usually one first thing in the morning, one after each of his naps and one before bed. Soon, I am going to begin mixing cow's milk with his formula, to try and get him on that around his 1st birthday. If I were still breastfeeding, I wouldn't be in any rush what so ever to wean him off, but with as expensive formula is, even off-brand, I would like to try and get him used to cow's milk as soon as possible. He has solid lunch and dinner and sometimes breakfast, although he doesn't seem to want breakfast when I offer it in the mornings, so we often skip it. I am going to start offering it every day though, in attempt to get him used to it. He gets a good mixture of table food and baby food. He still prefers table food and feeding himself. And if I do spoon feed him, I have to give him the baby spoon and feed him with a small "big people" spoon or a fork, depending on the food. I don't know if he thinks the baby spoon is a toy or if it's the color, but he MUST have it. And the food goes everywhere BUT in his mouth! lol
He really loves bananas, likes mashed potatoes, little pieces of chicken, pasta, beans and rice. I've had to stop giving him apples unless cooked or baked, because he bit off a piece too big and choked a bit recently! So no more frozen apples. He hasn't had any popsicles all month either - he has completely lost interest.

Sizes: There are still a few pieces of 9 month clothing that fit him, but he is pretty much exclusively in 12 month clothing. There are even some 18 month clothes that fit him, but it just depends on the brand! I also got several sets of new socks for his 1st birthday, because nearly all of his are way too small now! I held up his newborn shoes to his feet the other day and I nearly cried! He is still in size 4 diapers and will be for quite a while, I imagine.

Milestones and Changes:
  • He claps now whenever I do "Patty Cake" with him!
  • Vincent has mastered pulling himself into a standing position, often just using one hand. He can also ease himself back down into a sitting position with no trouble anymore, whereas he used to have to plop back down on his butt!

  • He is also getting better and better at standing with no support! The longest was 20 seconds before he sat back down. I don't have a photo of him doing it yet, but I'm certain I will by the next update! :)
  • Vince can say "Da-da", "Daddy", "Mum-mum", "Auntie" (although it sounds more like Addy), "Aye", "Ya" and "Hi". He has started making a few new sounds, like "gaga" and he has sounded like he said "Unkie" (which we say instead of Uncle), "duck", "lion" and "doggie", but he never said it again! lol He also did something interesting today when I had Sesame Street on; they were repeating the number 17 over and over and all of a sudden, he started saying "Ten-ten"! Even just hearing him vocally respond to words is very cool!
  • He has gotten really good at imitating - whether it's sounds, faces and bits and pieces of words. This one is his favorite: when I scrunch up my face and snort like a bull, he will do it too! xD I need to get it on video. It really is priceless!

  • He has got a new way of letting me know when he is ready for a bottle - he will make the "indian sound" (I'm sorry - that is so politically incorrect, but I do not know how else to describe it!) with his mouth! He also does it when he wants another bite.
  • He can walk forward, while holding onto a walker with one hand or holding onto my hand or shirt! I am working on gently letting go while he is walking, but he usually sits straight back down or falls forward onto his hands. We practice every day and I have a feeling it won't be too much longer before he is walking on his own!
  • Vincent has learned how to climb, when something is low enough. He can climb the stairs at his auntie's house with no assistance (though I climb up behind him with my hands ready haha!), he climbs onto the futon in his room and he has recently started to pull himself onto the top of his activity table as well!

Why Vaccinations are NOT a Personal Choice.

Okay folks, I'm going to go against my general social networking and blogging rule and address a pretty controversial topic, that I've become rather passionate about. You've seen it all over the news: vaccines. Particularly the MMR vaccine. I know this blog post is bound to ruffle some feathers, but I will take my chances, if it could potentially change someone's mind.
Between January 1st and January 30th 2015, there were 102 reported measles cases. That's more cases than there were in each of the single years from 2002-2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012 alone. Last year, there were around 650 reported cases. The reason? Not vaccinating.
Nowadays, not vaccinating has become a trend. Whether it's because parents aren't comfortable with the ingredients and chemicals in the vaccines, because of the claimed link between the MMR vaccine and autism or for religions reasons.

Let me throw a few facts out there for you:

Throughout the past few decades, awareness, recognition and diagnostic practice regarding autism have drastically improved. So naturally, the number of those diagnosed with autism has increased with time. Autism can't be definitely diagnosed until around 18-24 months of age, which is around the same time that vaccines such as the MMR vaccine are first administered. This could explain the reason that a connection between autism and the MMR vaccine was suspected. Early signs and symptoms are often present when children are as young as 8 months old. There is scientific proof that autism can be a result of genetic nongenetic events occurring before conception or during pregnancy, long before a vaccine would even be administered. However, Andrew Wakefield's 1998 claim that there is a link between autism and the MMR vaccine, was discredited. There is no scientific proof that autism is a result of the MMR vaccine after numerous studies. (Here's a great NPR article about a woman with an autistic child, who changed her mind about vaccines:
http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2015/02/04/383567862/once-a-vaccine-skeptic-this-mom-changed-her-mind)

Even if you hunt and grow your own food and produce your own hygienic products and clothing from scratch, I can pretty much guarantee you that you are coming into contact with more potentially harmful chemicals every day than you would receive in a single vaccine. If you drink water from any source, you are consuming chlorine and aluminum in small quantities. And even something as benign and essential as water can be toxic, if consumed in large quantities. Furthermore, your body actually already contains some of what are considered harmful ingredients, such as formaldehyde.

The claim that vaccines contain aborted human fetus cells or animal cells is completely false. Multiple purification steps ensure that no cells are present in the final product. There is no antifreeze in vaccines either, but rather a single component of antifreeze called polyethylene glycol, which is also widely and safely used in personal care creams like skin creams and toothpaste.

Prior to FDA approval, Vaccines go through significant clinical trials, involving tens of thousands of adults and children. Meaning that unless your child is immunocompromised, has allergies or is in any other way physically incapable of receiving vaccines, the chances of your child experiencing any side affects from the vaccine are slim to none. And even if you were to get sick after receiving your vaccines, having one of the diseases that the vaccine prevents would be MUCH worse and possibly fatal.

Your child may be perfectly healthy now. And I am certain that you as a parent want to do everything to keep them that way, hence the reason you question vaccines in the first place. But if your child has not received his vaccinations, he has a 90% chance of coming down with a disease, if around someone who is sick. Especially an airborne disease such as measles, is SO incredibly contagious. And people who have come down with measles can be contagious 4 days before and after the time that a rash is visible. A single sneeze could infect many people at once and the disease has contaminated a surface, like a door handle, it will remain contaminated for two hours.

I am pro-vaccines, so why would it matter to me if you don't vaccinate, you ask? Because my 11 month old son is still too young to receive his first MMR vaccine. Meaning he is highly susceptible. And he won't be able to get his second and final shot of the series until he is 4. You must also consider, that no vaccine is 100% effective. Some people are non-responsive to vaccines. There is still a chance of getting measles in a milder form if you're vaccinated. On top of this, there are many people, who are medically incapable of receiving vaccines, such as those with cancer or autoimmune diseases. These people rely on herd immunity to stay healthy.

I am sorry to have to put this bluntly. But if your child were to come down with a disease and pass it on to my child and my child died from the disease, YOU would be responsible for my child's death. I know that sounds extreme, but it is a cold, hard fact. A fact that proves that it is not a personal choice. I am all for making parenting choices that suit your family, whether it's to breastfeed or formula feed, use cloth or disposable diapers, circumcise, not circumcise et cetera. But when your parenting choices also affect the health and lives of others, the line must be drawn.

I am fully aware that people are going to make their own decisions, regardless of what anyone else says. But I am BEGGING you for the sake of your child's health, mine and others, that you educate yourself, using credible sources and talking to your doctor. I am also fully aware that I am no expert. I am not posting this because I am trying to be a know-it-all, or prove how wrong you are, but because I am concerned about the health and safety of not only my child, but yours. And if you still decide against vaccines, even if you are physically capable of receiving them, I don't want to argue with you, because I have wasted my time and breath so often during the past weeks since the Disneyland measles outbreak. Instead, I will kindly ask you to homeschool your children and keep them out of the general public, to ensure their safety and the safety of others. Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Dove Dry Spray VoxBox Review

Time for another Influenster VoxBox Review! This time around, I received the new Dove Dry Spray Antiperspirant. This is actually my second Dove review, as I received the Advanced Care Deodorant stick around this time last year. (You can read about it here: http://sahmiam13.blogspot.com/2014/03/dove-voxbox-review.html)

This product is almost exactly the same as the deodorant stick was, just in a different format. It is really smooth and moisturizing and didn't leave any stains on my clothing! My complaint, however, is the particular fragrance I received. It's not an unpleasant scent at all! But it's VERY strong and overpowering, just like the stick was. It could be that I am associating the scent with nausea, since I tried the last product when I was pregnant and wasn't able to use it. I believe the scent is called "Nourished Beauty" - it is on both the stick and the spray deodorant.

One good thing about the scent, is that it lasts a LONG time! I put that deodorant on and it was still strong the next morning. I will honestly say that I've never experienced that with any other deodorant before. Although this particular scent is not for me, the deodorant itself is fantastic quality and I'm very impressed by it! And since there are six different fragrances, I'm sure I can find one I like.

I'm pretty impressed by Dove products in general; I love their moisturizer and I actually use their "Go Fresh" deodorant. I highly recommend their products to anyone!
